The whole thing is shot in what looks like the hazy glow of an atmospheric TikTok filter, and the lead performances are a little bit too studied, their back-and-forth a bit too self-conscious and Charming Young Actor-y to feel totally absorbing.HELLO, GOODBYE, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN is the story of high school sweethearts Claire and Aidan. Clare, who has been withdrawn, shows the feelings she has been hiding, while Aidan accepts the relationship’s fate, and they depart on a “see you later” rather than a “goodbye”.ĭespite the maturity the characters show, however, Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between feels a bit too slight to have real emotional impact, and in some ways, the film is a bit of an extended eye-roll. In the end, after an argument (not something you tend to see with this intensity in a teen rom com), they compromise. The break, however, is not as clean as they expect.Īs Aidan attempts to take Clare to landmarks of all their “firsts – first date, first fight, first Valentine’s Day – she’s overwhelmed by his efforts and is clear expectation that their relationship will continue past the time they agreed. After a quick, cookie-cutter montage of their year together – which recalls To All The Boys’ motif of using season titles onscreen to mark the passage of time – we meet the young couple again on their final date, as they prepare to go their separate ways. The attraction between them, however, proves irresistible, and Aidan too impressive (“I bet you’re one of those people who is good at everything” she suspects early on), and so when the two inevitably kiss – in the rain, duh – they agree to date for the rest of the year, and break it off before they both move away. It’s to the narrative’s credit that it’s Clare who has her eyes on her future and isn’t ready to compromise for a boy, every inch the modern, self-possessed teen girl.
She is, obviously, wooed, but is determined to go to university, and doesn’t want ties to a boyfriend: high school, she says, in the exact, precocious manner of a female protagonist in a YA novel, “is the prologue” to the rest of her life.
Smart, ambitious Clare (Talia Ryder) has moved around the country since her parents divorced, but we join her as she moves back to her old neighbourhood for her last year of high school and not long afterwards meets Aidan (Jordan Fisher) at a Halloween party, where he is dressed as Ferris Bueller and performs “Twist and Shout” on karaoke to alarmingly professional standard. After the success of franchises like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Kissing Booth, Netflix has once again dipped a toe into the world of teen rom coms, with Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between, based on the 2015 novel of the same title by Jennifer E.
